FAQ’s
Q: How old do I have to be to come on a programme?
A: You need to be at least 16 years of age, and up to age 25.
Q: How do I apply/register my interest?
A:You can get in touch with us anytime here. You can sign up to receive our pānui (newsletters) on our news page (and be the first to know when registrations open). Once applications open you will be able to apply through our website, on the programme pages. Places are limited, so keep an eye on our socials for when registrations open.
Q: What do I need to bring on a programme?
A:Don’t worry, a gear list will be provided to you. Camping equipment (if applicable) such as tents are provided, as well as kai and inu (food and water). Well, ingredients will be provided… you’ll be doing the cooking!
Q: Do I need to be interested in/studying a science to come on a programme?
A: Not at all. If you have an interest in the sciences or outdoor education/sustainability, then you will certainly find value in our programmes. However, our kaupapa is centred around developing your unique leadership capabilities, no matter your passion or background.
Q:What’s the kai like on a programme?
A: There is delicious kai - and plenty of it! Everyone on the programme contributes to the cooking, and it is a fully vegetarian menu.
Q: What is the difference between the scholarship and fee-based positions?
A: Scholarship positions are fully funded, covering all programme costs, and are awarded based on need and fit. Fee-based positions are partially subsidised, meaning participants or their supporters contribute towards the remaining costs to help sustain the programme.
Q: Who can apply for a scholarship?
A: Scholarships are open to rangatahi aged 16+ from throughout Aotearoa who demonstrate passion, potential, and a commitment to the programme kaupapa. Applicants may be asked to provide an output as reciprocity, such as a reflection or community project.
Q: How much does the fee-based position cost?
A: The fee varies by programme and year. It covers the balance after scholarship subsidies. Please contact us or check the specific programme page for exact amounts.
Q: Can I apply for a scholarship if I can partly pay the fee?
A: Yes, we encourage you to apply for the option that best fits your circumstances. Scholarship decisions consider financial need, but also your willingness to contribute back to the programme.
Q: What support do you provide for funding applications?
A: We offer a template letter to help you request support from schools, community groups, iwi, trusts, or businesses. We can also provide official programme details to include in your application.
Q: What happens if I can’t afford the fee and don’t get a scholarship?
A: Please reach out to us. We want to support as many rangatahi as possible and may be able to discuss alternative options or payment plans.
Q: What is meant by reciprocity for scholarship recipients?
A: Reciprocity means giving back something meaningful to the programme or community, such as sharing what you learned through a presentation, creative work, volunteering, or community action.
Q: What is the Cora Wilding Scholarship?
A: The Cora Wilding Scholarship is a fully funded place on the programme, supported by YHA New Zealand. It honours Cora Wilding, founder of YHA, whose mission was to inspire young people through outdoor exploration and personal growth.
